- [Instructor] Welcome back. Let's discuss resilience engineering and the concepts that lie behind it. In tech, we're new to doing proper postmortems and understanding the nature of resilience of our systems. Luckily, these are things that researchers have been studying for years, especially in healthcare, aircraft accident investigation, disaster and risk assessment and related fields. The last 20 years have seen a sweeping set of innovations in how we understand safety and the creation of resilient systems that we can benefit from in tech. So what is resilience? Professor Erik Hollnagel, an expert on resilience engineering says, "A system is resilient if it can adjust its functioning "prior to, during, or following events, "changes, disturbances, and opportunities, "and thereby sustain required operations "under both expected and unexpected conditions."
