What is bias?

- It's estimated that our brains are exposed to 11 million pieces of information at any given moment, but our conscious brain can only process about 50 pieces of information at a time. As a result, our brains rely on shortcuts to fill in those gaps. They automatically filter the world through a lens formed by our past experiences, environments, and everything we read, watch, and learn. This subconscious lens forms stereotypes and attitudes, commonly known as implicit or unconscious biases, which shape our beliefs, decisions, and behavior. The problem with calling them unconscious is that it can make you feel that they're out of your control or you're not responsible when they're at play. The issue isn't unconscious bias, it's unchecked bias. When we don't challenge our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, we continue to give ourselves license to act recklessly.
