- When I need help summoning my own intellectual courage, I think of Galileo and Sojourner Truth, who both had the intellectual courage to speak out against prevailing beliefs. I also think of people like Hans and Sophie Scholl, who had the intellectual courage to publicly question the Third Reich after updating their own thinking. Intellectual courage is a vital ingredient of a critical thinking mindset. Intellectual, because it involves thoughts, beliefs, and ideas. Courage, according to Aristotle, because it's the virtue that's midway between cowardice and recklessness. How do you know if you have intellectual courage? Here's what to look out for in yourself.
