- How do you know when you're overthinking? Overthinking is unnecessary rumination or agonizing often causing a flood of negative thoughts. Overthinking is hard to avoid because we're bombarded with more information than we can process. It's hard to know what to pay attention to. News notifications, social media, search results. All the things others pay to have optimized for our brains, much of what we pay attention to isn't even our choice. Reframing how you think about overthinking starts with one important fact. When you improve the quality of your thinking, the quantity becomes less important. The goal is to strike the right balance between overthinking and under-thinking, resulting in good thinking. Overthinking comes from dwelling about the past and worrying about the future. Under-thinking comes from ignoring the past and assuming we know the future.
