- I'd like to share a little personal story about how attitudes can make such a big difference in learning and performance. When I went to college and took piano, I had an esteemed piano professor who gave me some pieces to work on, and I was excited to be able to learn from her, and thought, boy, she's given me hard stuff to do. (laughs) And so I worked and I worked and I worked to try to get these pieces as strong as I could, my fingering perfect, my timing perfect, my expression perfect, and so forth, and after several weeks I was playing for her, and she pounded on the piano, and says, "Stop, Michael, just stop. I hear you struggling. I don't hear your music. You're struggling. And I think you think this is hard for you. I know it's not hard for you, because I know what you're capable of. And so I want you to just sit and think quietly for a little bit, look at the score, and realize this is not that hard. And…
