Overview of human research
- [Instructor] In this video, I'm going to discuss the technical meaning of the term human research. So, to give you an inappropriately short history of global research ethics, as part of the atrocities taking place during World War II, it was found that research clinicians had tortured research participants in the name of research. Therefore, a large number of countries, including the United States, agreed in the 1964 Declaration of Helsinki on the set of international research ethics on what type of treatment is banned internationally. As part of the agreement, the countries were assigned to pass local laws to protect research participants and make sure torture, in the name of research, was not going on worldwide. In the United States, we have a law, 45 CFR part 46, known by its nickname, the Common Rule. This law applies to human research as that phrase is defined in the law.
