- [Narrator] In this video, we will discuss the difference between an observational study and an experiment. Here we have a diagram I call the study design hierarchy. It's how we categorize, classify, and talk about study designs in epidemiology. In fashion design, my former career, there were endless different clothing designs, but in epidemiology, there are only a few basic designs, and this diagram can help you understand them. So you'll see me revisiting this diagram throughout the course. Lets start at the top, which is human research. This is to remind you that this study design hierarchy only applies to human research, not animal research or research taking place in laboratories. Lets move down the hierarchy to the first split.
