Definition of data curation
- [Instructor] Next we dig into chapter five starting with this video on data curation. To describe curation, I give the example of going into a museum and seeing an old broken chair. If you sit on the chair, you might get yelled at by the guards. Why? It's just an old broken chair. Actually, it's not an old broken chair. It's an antique chair duly preserved in a museum. Why didn't you know that? Well, you might not have noticed the little plaque or card next to it explaining why it was important. That's museum curation and data curation means something along the same lines. Raw data sets without any curation documents explaining them are about as useful as a broken chair. So data curation becomes very important when doing secondary data analysis. Please note that some also call these documents metadata or information about the data.
