Designing intuitive forms with proximity
- [Instructor] Next, we're going to talk about proximity as it relates to creating more intuitive and user-friendly designs. The fourth principle of Gestalt Theory you can use in your digital designs is proximity, which is sometimes called proximity/grouping. For our purposes, "Proximity refers to the tendency for our minds to automatically group things together when they are close to each other or nearby, even when they don't share properties like size, shape, and color." Their relative nearness is the main criteria for this grouping phenomenon. One way to understand proximity grouping in action is to consider how an artist creates illustrations in a vector drawing program. If you have a set of closely placed shapes that resembles a cat, viewers will perceive that set of shapes based on their proximity and arrangements as a cat. Here's another example.
