VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP)
In this lesson, we're going to talk about the VLAN trunking protocol, VTP for short. Now this is a Cisco proprietary protocol that's going to assist with provisioning of VLANs on a switch, especially when you have a lot of switches within a Layer 2 domain. So there's four roles that a switch can participate in the VTP architecture. The first one is going to be a server, and on the server, this is where you're going going to create, modify, or delete the VLANs in a VTP domain. The next one is a client, and the client is going to receive the VTP advertisements, and it's going to modify the VLANs that are based off of what is on the VTP server. Now within that, we also have a transparent, and so with a transparent role, basically it says, I'm not going to make changes to my VLAN database that's locally on my switch, but I'll take a message and I'll pass it along to somebody else, just so that you know, I may not participate, but I'm going to communicate the messages along with the way…
