Building the STP topology - Cisco Tutorial

Building the STP topology
In this lesson, we're going to talk about how Spanning Tree can build a loop-free Layer 2 topology. So to start with, I have two switches that are using standard configuration out-of-the-box as if nothing's been tweaked in the configuration. So switch 1 and switch 2, and we can see that they have the system MAC address of all A's for Switch 1 with a priority of 32,768 and Switch 2 has the priority of 32,768 and the MAC address of all Bs. So what's going to happen is they're powered on, they're up and online, and they're running. The first thing I'm going to do is I'm going to connect the cables. So we're going to plug the cable in from Switch 2 to Switch 1. Now it's at this point in time that Switch 1 is going to advertise BPDUs towards Switch 2 as if it's the root bridge. it thinks it is the more preferred or superior as candidate for being the root bridge. At the same time, Switch 2 doesn't know anything about what Switch 1 is, and he thinks that he is the root bridge. So they're…
