- When I was leading the New York City Office of LGBTQ+ Policy & Practice, a colleague once gently advised, "You're going to need a lot of friends to succeed in this role." At the time, I admit I took offense. Why would I need friends in this work? Isn't it obvious that transforming our work culture was the right thing to do? With a few decades between that moment and where I am today, I can say with confidence, this was some of the best advice I've received about how to manage workplace transformation. It's for this reason I encourage you to consider the workplace friends or champions you'll need to help further refine your belonging culture vision and commitment statement. In classic change management theory, there's a premise that no matter what change a workplace introduces, 20% will resist it, 60% will remain apathetic, and another 20% will embrace it.
