Be attentive to nonverbal cues and respond appropriately

- If you share an idea with a seemingly relaxed executive that suddenly changes his or her stance, or pushes back in his chair, pay attention. As you communicate with your senior leaders, read and respond to these nonverbal cues. Pay attention to the executive's eye contact. Are their eyes engaged with you, giving thought to what you're saying? Or do they have that animal-in-the-headlight look? Or do they look like they're daydreaming? If their physical stance changes or you recognize that they're not being attentive to the conversation, you've just been given important information that you have struck a nerve. What do you do if you may have struck a nerve? Well, you pause, you analyze what you've said, ask a question to demonstrate awareness of this change, redirect your conversation accordingly.
