- [Instructor] Healthcare has traditionally struggled with information exchange. Application programming interfaces, or APIs, offer a path towards the standardized secure data exchange. However, implementing APIs without governance creates new risks. Imagine APIs like doorways. They let different computer systems talk to each other. Managing these doorways starts with big picture decisions about why you're creating them. Are they mainly for your internal systems to communicate or are they for sharing information with outside organizations? You also need to decide which of your systems should be available through these doorways, and what rules these doorways need to follow. Let's take a deeper look at how to implement it.
