Big Data

- There are a lot of ethical issues around massive data sets or what's called big data and data ownership. In 2010, the National Science Foundation started giving grants to organizations that could capture human genetic data. The funding created a lot of large-scale genomic research facilities, or LSGRs. Now, each human genome contains roughly 20 to 25,000 genes. Each of these has over three million base pairs of DNA. So that's a lot of data to store. But big data clusters can store this data on thousands of people for a relatively low cost. But this isn't just any data. DNA is a biological blueprint for everyone. These LSGRs capture and compare this genomic data. They also share it with other universities through something called genomic data sharing. I once worked for one of the largest genomic data sharing universities in the country. The researchers struggled with some of the core ethical issues around data ownership.…
