- Should you take your umbrella with you today? You could look out the window, see clear skies, and figure, no need. Or you could look at your weather app that says there's an 80% chance of rain an hour from now based on a ton of data. Guess which one is the more data-informed decision and therefore thus smarter one? Data literacy is important because it offers a new lens through which to see the world. You build a mental model of the world in your head, and you navigate around with best guesses. You guess gravity will remain the same. You guess the sun won't go out today. You don't need to analyze the data because these things haven't changed all your life. But when it comes to choosing the right pizza to feed your friends, it would be good to have some specific knowledge of who's vegetarian, who's gluten-intolerant, who's on a low-carb diet.
