A matter of interpretation

- Get oriented, get educated, get feedback, get ahead. Before you start dredging up insights and conclusions, you need to get oriented to the data. Understand the bits and bites you've been given or have uncovered. Where did the data come from? Is there a clear description of the data? How was it filtered? Is this data from a certain time period? Do you know what all of the attributes mean? And of course, what was the purpose behind collecting this data in the first place? Once you're comfortable with all of those, then it's time to get educated. Get to know the environment that the data lives in. If we're talking about the global market for tennis rackets, you need to do some market research into the global tennis racket ecosystem. If we're talking about the price of beans, spend some time studying the commodities markets, historical crop yields, and the weather. This is called domain knowledge.
