From the course: Data Analytics with Observable

Who is this course for?

- If you work with data, this course is for you. Sure, Observable occupies a specific corner of the data world, in that it focuses on a few ways of doing things. But before we get into that, I want to point out that data workers should learn a variety of tools and ways of doing things, and I think you'll find some things in Observable that you won't find in some of the other tools you're using. You'll almost certainly find some things easier and quicker to accomplish in Observable than in other tools. So if you work with data, you belong here. Now, if you specifically focus on data visualization, you should definitely consider learning more about Observable. It's built from the ground up to enable data exploration and communication in visible form. It was developed by the creators of one of the most important tools for creating custom animated and interactive visualizations, D3. Because of this pedigree, Observable has always been primarily a tool to show visualized data. Many of its key features are devoted to making visualizations quick and easy, as well as highly extensible. If you specifically focus on using JavaScript, then Observable is also especially for you. While there are a couple of slight differences in how things work here, they're minor, and you'll be able to be up and running in Observable nearly instantaneously. If you aren't a programmer, Observable is still for you. It includes many click and drag features, enabling data manipulation and visualization with zero coding required. However, because Observable is always generating code as you interact with those non-coding features, you have access to that code. You'll learn how to read it and will also learn to extend and adapt that code over time. So you'll learn a coding mindset while using Observable and will likely be inspired to learn how to code yourself pretty quickly. You'll also come across many other people's examples, which will inspire you and provide a template for you to do similar work, helping you experiment and grow as a data visualization practitioner. So if you're interested in data and visualization, I'm willing to bet this course is for you, so jump in and learn.
