The who, why, and what of information security

(upbeat music) - Cybersecurity protects a number of things, the integrity and continued operation of systems, but most of all, it protects information. The information is confidential information for organizations such as company, privacy, private information of people. The intellectual property of businesses is also sensitive information that governments use, such as military information or political information. And another aspect of cybersecurity information protection is protecting against the inference, the collection of information, and using it to draw some conclusion. This is a form of indirect protection of sorts, because we don't want an adversary to collect information from several sources and still be able to derive information. (gentle music) An example of that last case of inference of indirect protection could be illustrated by the well-known breach of the OPM database, the Office of Personnel Management.
