Privacy in the European Union
- [Narrator] Just as internet freedom varies greatly from country to country, the laws that govern data privacy vary greatly as well. Privacy law gets pretty complex, pretty quickly. So here's a few key things you should know from an international perspective. As I mentioned in the previous chapter, the United States has a peculiar approach to privacy, owing to its own legal history among other factors. That leaves it with a patchwork of different laws and regulations, giving tech firms latitude to operate from places where laws about data collection are lax. And here, the EU, or European Union, plays an increasingly important role. In general, the EU has stricter standards than the US for how companies must treat and protect personally identifiable information. In 2018, all EU countries harmonized their privacy laws through a regime known as GDPR, or General Data Protection Regulation. "WIRED" magazine calls it, quote,…
