What are phishing attacks?
- Phishing attacks are the most common way for a criminal to gain a foothold into your world. Of course, if you haven't been patching your systems in a timely manner, there may be easier ways to get into your network, because a phishing attack requires a lot of preparation before releasing it. But phishing usually works and it's widely used. Here's a high-profile example. A single email started a chain reaction that resulted in the biggest known business email compromise of all time. Facebook and Google together lost $121 million to the same phisher. This criminal set up a fake company named Quanta Computer, the same name as a real hardware supplier to both victims. The criminal then emailed Facebook and Google very convincing looking invoices, which they paid, to banks controlled by the attackers. Here's another example.
