- Ransomware attackers aren't too particular when it comes to choosing potential victims. Companies of all sizes across a variety of industries have been targeted. That's because ransomware attacks are successful when it disturbs core services and key processes that a business needs to operate. As we highlighted earlier in the course, a key element of ransomware attacks is data encryption. So how do attackers determine which data a business considers valuable? Let's dig in. The first category of data is financial. Financial data include things like account numbers and credit card details. This makes companies like banks, payroll providers, and credit card companies ripe targets. Next is personally identifiable information, commonly referred to as PII.
