- Ransomware has become a popular and profitable tool for cyber criminals in the past decade. And with time, this type of malware has become more sophisticated and effective. The journey started with lock screens, but has now evolved into advanced encryption techniques. In this video, we'll walk through how ransomware evolved into a significant threat for companies, individuals, and governments. Though it's been around a few decades ransomware didn't start making a name for itself until the early two thousands. In an earlier video, we talked about the first ransomware attack distributed by floppy discs mailed to targeted medical professionals who'd attended a conference. A little after 2010, ransomware started spreading through email phishing campaigns and exploit kits, which allowed cyber criminals to infect large numbers of computers with a lot less effort.
