- Social media is a treasure trove of knowledge. Personally, when I'm doing preliminary research on a new city to travel to, I pick up my phone and get to scrolling. Sometimes I stumble upon an influencer whose content could help me with research efforts and give them a follow. Often I'll get a follow back, but not from the influencer I followed. Instead, it's from someone impersonating them with a username that's almost identical. If I'm not careful, I could easily become the victim of a social media phishing attack. Social media phishing uses social media platforms to trick people into giving away sensitive information or money. This shows up in a number of ways: fake giveaways, impersonation follow backs, like I mentioned, malicious ads or sponsored posts. Being that social media easily connects people, it's becoming a very great opportunity for scammers to conveniently access their victims.
