The role of AI in cyber threats

- We've talked about top cloud threats and how attackers exploit people in systems, but what happens when artificial intelligence gets involved? Let's explore how AI is transforming cybersecurity, empowering defenders, but also giving attackers powerful new tools. AI in security is a double-edged sword, and understanding both sides is important for staying ahead. Let's start with how defenders use AI. AI helps security teams analyze massive amounts of cloud data to detect threats faster. It learns what normal looks like in your environment, and then flags behavior that stands out like a login from an unusual location or a sudden spike in file downloads. AI can also automate responses like blocking suspicious users or isolating affected systems. This helps security teams respond in seconds instead of hours. Most importantly, AI allows defenders to scale security operations even in complex cloud environments. Unfortunately, attackers use AI too. They use it to generate realistic phishing emails, deep fake voices, and even fake customer service chats, making scams harder to detect. Machine learning can guess passwords faster by analyzing patterns. And some attackers use AI to test and refine their malware, making it harder for traditional defenses to catch up. So while defenders are getting smarter, so are the threats. Let's look at a real world example in the article on your screen. Attackers use AI to mimic a chief executive's voice and demand a fraudulent transfer of almost $250,000. There has also been unfortunate examples of attackers who deploy chatbots that can impersonate support staff to socially engineer users into revealing sensitive information. These examples show how AI is shaping both sides of the cyber battlefield. So what should you take away from this lesson? AI helps security teams work faster and smarter, but attackers use it too. That means threats like phishing, ransomware, and social engineering will only get more sophisticated. And while AI can help, human awareness is still one of the best defenses. Understanding how AI works on both sides helps you stay one step ahead in this evolving threat landscape.
