Counterfeit apps
- The art of counterfeiting is not new. Counterfeit money, counterfeit artwork, counterfeit high-end purses, pretty much any item that's considered valuable has been faked by scammers throughout the ages. Now, hackers are taking the strategy to the digital world with counterfeit mobile apps. However, the scam is not to trick a user into paying money for what might seem to be an expensive item. Rather, it's to trick a user into allowing a hacker's application access to the information on their mobile device. Hackers do this by creating fake apps that look very similar to the real thing and hosting them on the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. They assume that some users will fall for the hoax download the fake apps, give them access to the information on the mobile device and even steal real authentication information that a user would typically submit to the real legitimate app. According to the McAfee Mobile…
