Stereotypes vs. cultural patterns
- Cultural competence depends on your ability to recognize specific differences across cultures, but it's important to understand the difference between stereotyping a culture versus recognizing cultural patterns. A stereotype is a rigid description of behavior or traits associated with a particular culture. It's an oversimplified generalization about a group. It's an assumption that an individual who belongs to a particular culture would necessarily hold those beliefs or demonstrate those behaviors. Examples of stereotypes might be, "Asians are good at math," or, "A tall Black man plays basketball," or, "Women are the weaker sex." "Germans like to drink beer," or, "The British don't show emotion." These common characterizations are obviously too broad to include everyone.
