- When I started building websites back in 2006, we didn't have to worry too much about different screen sizes. Most people were browsing websites on desktops and laptops, but major developments around that time made mobile browsing more accessible. In 2005, Opera Mini was released, enabling web access on phones that previously couldn't run web browsers. In 2007, the first iPhone was introduced. This took mobile browsing to the next level by including a touch screen. Companies were starting to realize they needed to optimize for smaller screens. In those early days, if there was support for smaller screens, it usually meant creating separate websites for desktops and mobile devices. In 2010, Ethan Marcotte introduced the idea of responsive web design in his article for the publication, A List Apart.
