- In early 2001 with much fanfare, Boeing introduced the Sonic Cruiser, a cutting edge plane designed to fly faster and further with the same fuel cost. Yet a year later, the Sonic Cruiser concept had been withdrawn and replaced with the slower, more conventional, but more fuel efficient 787 concept. Why? Boeing engineers wanted to push boundaries and redefine what an airliner was, but their airline customers cared about saving fuel, not getting to destinations faster. Your key stakeholders will often have different needs and perspectives on this project than you do. As Boeing learned, you need to communicate with your stakeholders early, not after design and launch.
