Rely on external accountability
Why does accountability come up so much when we're talking about forming good habits? Accountability is key because it means that we face consequences for what we're doing, even if that consequence is merely the fact that someone else is monitoring us. Accountability is a ubiquitous feature in our lives. If we believe that someone's watching, we behave differently. is a powerful and effective tool for habit formation because it addresses a fundamental aspect of human nature. We are more likely to follow through on something if we know that someone else is watching or expecting us to do it. In Chapter 1, we talked about the Four Tendencies personality framework, and we talked about the fact that external accountability is critical for the Obliger Tendency. Obligers, external accountability is often the key to maintaining any habit.
