What is career pathing?
- There's a saying that without a plan, any road will do. It's also been said that to earn more, you must learn more, and as the amazing Dr. Seuss said, the more you learn, the more places you will go. I'd like to share the importance of designing employee career plans, also refer to as career pathing or skill pathing. The goal of a career plan is to close personal skills gaps, present growth opportunities, increase productivity and increase compensation. Most employees don't have a career path or goals. This is a missed opportunity for the organization and the employees. As Mary Kay famously said, most people plan their vacations better than their careers, and that's a fact. When I speak to a group of employees and ask if anybody has a career plan, it's not uncommon to have nobody raise their hand. I remind them that if their organization doesn't help them to develop one, then they'll have to do it for themselves.…
