- The truth is that how your speech is received is mostly determined by the quality of the material you present and how well you personally deliver that material. However, there are a few other variables to consider that will help you achieve even higher quality. First, it's a classic. Know your audience. Older versus younger, male versus female, or conservative and formal versus laid-back and informal. Find out early, so that you can use that knowledge to shape what you prepare. Next, know the venue. Aside from the location details, you'll want to know about the actual room, the seating capacity, the type of seating available, whether or not there's a stage or a podium and so on. You don't want to dictate here nearly as much as just understanding your speaking environment, so you're ready to use it. Another huge variable that I have to address is your use of slides.
