Reinforcing the myth of the mammy

- The Mammy Caricature was used to justify economic discrimination and racism during the Jim Crow era in the US. During this time in US History, there was a collection of laws that legalized segregation based on race. The term Jim Crow came from a black character in minstrel shows. These laws existed for about 100 years, starting around the Post-US Civil War era until 1968. These laws were used to marginalize black and African Americans by denying individuals the right to vote and to receive an education among many other opportunities. The idea of the Mammy reinforced the stereotype that black women were only capable of being domestic workers during the time of slavery. In the US, the Mammy was portrayed as proof that black women were happy as enslaved individuals and content to serve the white family they were working for.
