- [Instructor] In this short little video, I want to talk a little bit about file formats and explain the difference between a raster file format and a vector file format. A raster image or raster file format, also referred to as a bitmap, is an image made up of pixels. A pixel is the smallest unit of a picture that can displayed or modified. Resolution is simply the number of pixels per inch, or PPI, in a bitmap grid. The higher the PPI, in other words, the more pixels per inch, the more information or detail in the image. The main advantage of a raster image is the ability to allow for smooth tonal control, for example, in the case of skin tone in a photograph. Two main drawbacks of a raster image would be the file size, typically much larger than a vector file format, and the inability to resize the image without image loss. Typically, if you're using a raster image, you would not want to resize any more than about 20%…
