- Back at the start of my career, I used to say that I just talked my way into my job as the youngest state director in the nation serving on behalf of the Obama Administration. I was only 21 years old and felt that at any moment, someone was going to realize they had made a huge mistake in hiring me. So I felt this need to constantly prove myself worthy of the chance I'd been given. So what did this look like in practice? It looked like staying in the office every night until 9:00 or 10 o'clock, constantly working weekends, and feeling like a failure no matter how many hours I put in because my to-do list was constantly growing. I felt totally inadequate even when I was being asked to share my best practices on national phone calls with other state directors. This resulted in chronic anxiety, and ultimately, complete and total burnout. It took me years to regain my sense of power, agency and control over my career.…
