Pick a conferencing platform
- [Instructor] There are a myriad of tools that you can use to facilitate your research projects. Some of them are more specific to UX research. For example, User Testing and UserZoom are wonderful tools but also come with a high price tag. Want to know how much? You'll need to schedule a demo or start a free trial before you get that information. If you can afford to use these tools or if your company already has a subscription, then that's wonderful, and by all means, go ahead and do your research on these platforms. In my case, for most studies and most clients who don't already have subscriptions to tools like these, I will conduct the research using either Zoom or GoToMeeting. A business subscription to either of these products can be licensed for about $20 a month or under $200 a year if paid annually. I love GoToMeeting the most because of a unique feature among standard meeting tools, built in timestamp notes. I'll say a bit more about this later. I also like the built-in transcription which generally works well enough for my purposes. Meanwhile, a nearly universal comfort is what makes Zoom great to use too. And Zoom has a myriad of apps so you can certainly replicate this in Zoom by selecting one of the many app options available to you. Sometimes at additional cost. Although both GoToMeeting and Zoom have a free tier, there are limitations that can cause frustration. So I recommend sticking with the paid tier of either in both cases at the business level. Meanwhile, in addition to the paid tiers of Zoom or GoToMeeting, if you want something totally free, many companies are using Microsoft Teams for internal purposes and you can piggyback your research on this. As a caveat though, sometimes Teams can be clunky when you're connecting to a person who is not a part of the company. Google Meet is another option. There's a free tier, but that doesn't allow you to record or create transcripts, so like GoToMeeting and Zoom, you'd likely end up at a similar price point when all is said and done. Now that you've picked your conferencing platform, let's start setting up those sessions.
