- What is RAM? RAM is known as random-access memory. It is what is also known as volatile memory, which means it clears out when you shut down the computer. This is also referred to as temporary memory. RAM is responsible for the computer being able to run many progRAMs at the same time. Think of the last time you had many windows open at the same time. Did your computer slow down? This is how larger amounts of RAM help us out. Most computers today have gigabytes of RAM for multitasking. My laptop has 32 gigabytes of RAM. I do want 64 by the way. Hopefully my boss will get that for me. Upgrading your RAM is usually the simplest way to increase the user experience on a computer. In most computers, RAM is upgradable.
