- Before we get into this episode, we need to define services, processes, and users. Services are applications or functions started by an operating system to perform specific and critical background tasks as needed. Services are functions the operating system needs to run, typically in the background. Processes are applications, utilities, or other softwares that you or I start. For example, if I were to start Microsoft Word, it would be a process, and it may even start some supporting services. Users are you, me, them, anyone who can issue commands or a request to a computer. Anybody with the right permissions can access the resources of a computer system and specific files, folders, or application is a computer user. But let's focus on processes and services.
