From the course: Complete Guide to the AWS Well-Architected Framework

Demo: The Well-Architected Tool

- [Instructor] In this demo, we're going to look at the Well-Architected Tool, a utility which you can get to by logging into your Amazon account and, from the Management Console window, search for the Well-Architected Tool. So you can see, as I start typing Well-Architected, it shows up as one of the options, and that's where we are. We are looking at the workloads that it currently knows about, and this is something that you can define, the workload that you want to build at AWS. So let's define the workload. We have to give it a name. So let's give it a name of Financial. We have to give it a description. Some things are mandatory. So we're going to create a mobile app that's going to be a financial application. We then have to add in the review owner. Who's the boss? So we can say it's myself, Mark. It's going to be Production. I have to select the region where I am going to actually operate, so I'll select US East, but you could select any region. I could add in account IDs if there was AWS accounts I wanted to add in that the workload was going to be actually running across those accounts. And I could add in information on the application, the architectural design and the industry type, which we'll just leave out for now, but you could add that information in. Other options are enabling the Trusted Advisor, using other services. We will just move down and say Next. We could add a profile. And a profile would allow me to enter a select number of questions. We'll leave the full number of questions available. Click Next. We won't use a lens. A lens is customized settings for your particular industry. And there's an article attached to this class talking about using lens, so take a look at that article. For now, we'll scroll down and select the lens of the Well-Architected Framework. Note, we could also add in another lens, which would add in questions pertaining to that particular area, such as mergers and acquisitions or the service list lens. So we've defined our workload. An empty vessel. And what we can start doing is reviewing all the questions from the Well-Architected Framework, and it starts with Operational Excellence. If I click the Operational Excellence to show you all of the pillars that we've talked about in this class, you can see that there are a number of questions per pillar that you can go through and decide if it matches and makes sense for what you're wanting to design at AWS. So if we start with Operational Excellence and look at the priorities, how do I determine my priorities? In the middle of the screen, I can look at a few different options. Maybe I want to know what they mean by Evaluate Customer Needs. So if I click on Info, on the right it gets highlighted, and I can get that information. So I can go through and answer all of these questions as they pertain to my particular workload. And once I've finished, I can save those questions and have them reviewed. So take a look at the Well-Architected Framework Tool, and I think you'll find it a pretty decent consulting tool to gets you focused on what you're going to build at AWS.
