- [Instructor] What is the registry? It's a configuration database comprising two parts. One part is a single file called NTUSER.DAT which relates to user settings and is stored in the user's profile folder, typically that's C:\user\userID. The rest of the files are stored as a collection under C:\Windows\System32\Config. The internal structure of the registry is presented as a hierarchy consisting of a number of hives, each of which contains subfolders. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT at the top of the hierarchy contains file association information. So for example, it's what determines what to do with an XLS file when you find one in the operating system. HKEY_CURRENT_USER contains the information that pertains to the currently signed-in user. So it's all of the user settings that aren't stored externally in something like the app data folder.
