- [Presenter] So, first off, what is DAX? DAX stands for Data Analysis Expressions. It was modeled initially after the Excel formula language, it is a functional language, much like Excel, so if you're an Excel user and you've written Excel expressions, you're used to nesting functions inside of functions and, therefore, using the DAX language will have a certain degree of familiarity to you. It is used to encapsulate business logic in your data model, and some examples of the use of DAX are calculating a full name from a first name and last name, calculating a gross margin percentage, or perhaps even calculating a year-over-year percentage change. And back many years ago when I first started to teach DAX, I had somebody ask me a very interesting question.
