The data is still present in the database, where data masking is changing the data in the database. Data masking via Enterprise Managers plugin can offer permanent masking of data to use in non-production environments and database copies to protect critical data. The process of data masking first goes through a step of data discovery to identify what will need to be masked. There were recent additions in Oracle Enterprise Manager 13c to enhance the referential relationships recognized and make it easier to discover columns that will need to be masked and to mask them correctly for joins. Recognizing that if data is randomly masked and replaced but not matched in reference columns that SQL joins on is essential.
