A survey of open source firewalls
- [Instructor] pfSense is one of the best-known open source firewalls, available as a software appliance or embedded in a range of NETGEAR hardware products. The software appliance comes as an ISO file for installation, and its underlying OS is free BSD. It offers the standard capabilities for filtering incoming and outgoing traffic, and it offers a VPN service. It can be configured to run virtual lands, and has a network address translation. It can provision DHCP addresses and supports DNS as a resolver or a forwarder. OPNsense is a fork of pfSense, and comes with a more polished interface and user experience. It has the standard routing capabilities and also offers DHCP and DNS services. It's got VPN capability, and has an intrusion detection and prevention capability built in. OPNsense, again, is based on the free BSD and comes as an installable ISO file. IPFire is another well-known open source firewall, which comes on its own Linux distribution.
