- [Narrator] Data lifecycle management in Purview consists of a number of elements. Retention labels define rules for how long data should be retained and when and if it should be permanently deleted. You can automatically or manually apply labels to items such as documents and emails to enforce compliance, to retain valuable data, or to assign a status to the data, such as that the item is an official record of some kind. Retention policies enable you to automatically manage the lifecycle of data in your organization by retaining and/or deleting content across the various Microsoft 365 apps, including Exchange, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams. Label policies define sets of sensitivity or retention labels that you can apply to specific users and groups, which govern how data is classified, protected, and governed within the organization.
