- [Instructor] Analytics engineering is a relatively new branch on the analytics tree. The term was coined around 2018, but its history is deeply entangled with data analytics and engineering as a whole. In this section, we'll briefly go over the history of analytics, so we can appreciate the huge stride we've made in the last decades to evolve and improve this exciting field. For thousands of years, humans have been analyzing problems and using data, but modern analytics saw transformation, pun intended, when Edgar F Codd created the relational database in the 1970s. With the creation of the relational database, users could more quickly store and retrieve data. In the 1980s, we saw the rise of the personal computer. Spreadsheet software also gained popularity such as Microsoft Excel and VisiCalc.
