Smart teams don't just move from one project to the next. They look back in order to strategically move forward. If your team isn't regularly using after action reviews or retrospectives as a part of your normal workflow, you're missing a critical opportunity to learn from each other. You should set aside time specifically for this discussion. It shouldn't be an agenda item on a longer meeting agenda. designate a specific time for the discussion. It doesn't have to be a long conversation, just a focused one. To get the benefit of retrospectives, you need some important ground rules. Three that I recommend are, one, leave rank at the door. Each perspective is equally important here. If people are worried about how they'll appear to their supervisor or their boss's boss, they'll hold back. it's important that you establish a level playing field. Two, avoid blame.
