- The first step to improving your communication is self-awareness. In fact, you already practiced self-awareness when you explored how well you listen and the impact that has on your communication. Self-awareness is the greatest gift we have as human beings. It's also the most challenging to unwrap and open because it means having to take a hard look at how we communicate, respond, and react, and what's getting in the way of being effective. Let's now talk about the three biggest barriers to effective communication: your mind, your emotions, and your environment, and how they show up in your day-to-day interactions. As I step through each one, think about which is the most likely to get in the way for you. The first barrier, your mind, are the assumptions, judgments and beliefs we hold about others based on what they say, do or think.
