- [Instructor] Authentication confirms the identity of a process, system, or person. Authenticate everyone and everything who accesses data in some manner. When authenticating into a system, I can use one of three things. What you know, such as a password, passphrase, PIN, or even a lock combination. What you have in your hand, such as a smart card, a token, or even a dongle. A smart card is a small device that contains a microchip and has data storage capabilities. It can store several forms of identification, such as a fingerprint and a password, and it's available in several form factors, such as cards, key fobs, and USB tokens. And what you are. Well, that will be in the form of a biometric, such as a fingerprint, iris recognition, or voice recognition.
