Network programmability is all about letting software do our configuration for us, instead of going from one device to another device and configuring those devices ourselves, one at a time. And the term we often hear associated with this is SDN, software-defined networking, and we want to get an overview of SDN in this video and take a look at a couple of Cisco offerings in this space. To begin though, let's think of how a traditional router or a traditional switch would work. Each of these devices would have three different planes of operation. There is the data plane that's focused on carrying the data. It's concerned with getting a packet or a frame in the ingress interface, and then as quickly as possible, sending it out of the appropriate egress interface. Up at the control plane is where those forwarding decisions are made.
