- [Instructor] The user interface or UI we use to control our system can vary based on which distribution we are running. Primarily, a Linux system will have one or two UIs, the console if we're interacting with the system in text mode or a desktop environment if we're using a graphical mode. There are many desktop environments out there, including GNOME, KDE Plasma, Xfce, MATE, Cinnamon, and others. GNOME and KDE Plasma are both very popular and present a modern and user-friendly experience. Xfce, LXQt, and others are aimed more at lightweight or minimal installations where resources are low or where a fancy graphical experience isn't necessary. MATE is based on an older version of GNOME for those who enjoyed how that worked. And Cinnamon is designed to be easy to use and friendly for people switching from other platforms.
